Wels Catfish

catfish

The catfish is like no other fish they are very power full they have a long muscular body. There is no need to use wire traces for cats as there mouths are very soft apart from there sand paper / Velcro like teeth. When fishing for catfish you should use a covered braid like quick silver.
At the top of the cats mouths in the corners there are four whiskers which the catfish will use to find food. Some say that catfish can only be caught at night but I have seen them caught in the middle of the day in full sun, but everyone has there own view on this.
In most waters that contain catfish they can be caught quite close to the marginal bank so a long cast is not always required.
The catfish is a scavenger at night and day it roams the lake looking for dead fish, small mammals, leeches and any other food that's around. I have seen catfish attack ducks.
If the lake you are fishing has carp in try a big fishmeal boilie or a large halibut pellet.
Live baits are also worth a go and they can trigger the catfish to the vibration that the live bait sends out. Good baits for catfish include dead or live bait, squid, fishmeal boilie's, liver, luncheon meat.
When fishing for catfish they are and can be a shy baiting fish and they do not like resistance so one of the best ways to fish for them is with a running rig and to make sure that your reel has been set correctly so that once the bait has been taken the catfish is free to run until you strike into the fish.
